Electric bike finance: loans, leasing and subsidies in Switzerland

Electric bike finance

An electric bike often costs several thousand francs. This guide compares the financing options for electric bikes in Switzerland, from cash payment to installments personal loan, while also taking into account subsidies, taxation and insurance.

For a small purchase, cash or a truly free offer often suffice. A larger family project could justify a loan. The information below is set for October 6, 2026, with the remaining checks noted.

Prices and types: what does an electric bike really cost

The category of the bike influences the equipment, insurance, and budget. According to ch.ch and the BPA, it is necessary to distinguish between:

  • Slow bike. Assistance up to 25 km/h, without a plate. It can be driven from the age of 16 without a license, or from the age of 14 with an appropriate license. Helmets are still recommended. Plan to have the necessary equipment and insurance coverage.
  • Fast bike. Assistance up to 45 km/h. Adapted license, yellow plate, helmet and civil liability are mandatory. These requirements are included in the overall budget.
  • Cargo bike. The March 2026 BPA sheet distinguishes between light and heavy categories. A single scheme therefore is not suitable. Detailed obligations require visual inspection of the BPA sheet before resuming them.

Before you start financing an electric bike, ask the retailers for quotes. Then separate the expenses:

  • Purchase price of the bike, helmet and anti-theft device.
  • Insurance and maintenance.
  • Possible replacement of the battery.

Finally, distinguish the price, the cash required for the purchase, the cost of financing, and the ordinary expenses.

Electric bike financing, the options at a glance

A low monthly fee does not guarantee an economical solution. Here are the differences to consider for each option.

  • Accounted for. You own the bike from the moment of purchase. You pay its price without interest from the credit institution. The seller’s choice remains free. However, please keep your security deposit. No credit agreement is added to the sale.
  • Payment in installments. Check the property terms during payments and after full payment. Add up the down payment, installments, fees, and imposed insurance. Check the early repayment. The application of the LCC depends on the contract and its exclusions.
  • Leasing. You use the bike without automatically becoming its owner. Add in the down payment, rent, fees, imposed insurance, and any possible resale. Consider restitution and early exit. Some contracts fall under the LCC.
  • Personal loan You purchase the bike as a freehold property from the chosen seller. The total amount includes repayment, interest and any fees. Creditworthiness is a condition for access to credit. The LCC provides for an early repayment when applicable.
  • Subsidies. They may complement a payment method. They do not determine ownership of the bike alone. Their amount reduces the net cost only if you receive it. The regulations set out the conditions and possibilities for accumulation.
  • Employer contribution. It could supplement your budget according to the proposed plan. Clarify ownership, participation, restrictions, and consequences of leaving. Do not count on any contribution until confirmation.

To compare electric bike financing, ask for two separate indicators: the effective annual rate, or TAEG, and the total amount paid over the same period CHF. Add the usage expenses over an identical period. An offer at 0 also % deserves a comparison with the cash price.

Subsidies and tax deductions, reduce the amount to be financed

Start with your municipality. The criteria, budgets, and deadlines vary. The sources examined do not confirm a single federal grant accessible to everyone. This does not rule out targeted programs.

In Lausanne, the official page mentions a new bicycle intended for personal use. It provides for a purchase in a Laussane store approved by equiwatt. Home conditions and the requirement to pay the FEE tax apply.

The City announced an extension until the end of 2026. This announcement does not guarantee either the funds available today or unchanged terms and conditions. Please check the operational conditions before purchasing.

For your electric bike financing, there are the application process, the approval decision, the purchase, and the payment. Their order depends on the device. If the aid arrives after the purchase, you will have to advance its amount.

Before buying, check on the municipal website:

  • The eligibility of the bicycle, the seller and the claimant.
  • The available funds and the deadlines.
  • The necessity of a prior request.
  • Documentation, accumulation and compatibility with leasing.

As of CHF 2026, Circular AFC no. 215 confirms a bicycle allowance of 700 per year for direct federal tax. It applies to business travel expenses between home and work, subject to applicable conditions.

This deduction reduces taxable income. It does not reimburse the cost of the bicycle and does not automatically provide 700 CHF in tax savings. Never deduct it from the amount to be financed. Check the canton’s regulations separately.

A confirmed subsidy can reduce the net cost of the bike, but its payment after purchase requires an advance payment. A tax deduction, on the other hand, reduces taxable income and not the price to be paid. Distinguishing between these mechanisms allows us to assess the need for financing without compromising our savings buffer.

Leasing and deferred payment: financing electric bicycles from the dealer

In leasing, read the conditions for return, repurchase and termination. You are not the owner during the contract. An early exit could cost you dearly.

Article 1, paragraph 2, letter a of the LCC applies to certain private movable leases. For the contracts concerned, Article 11 provides for a written agreement, the effective annual rate, and a table of the consequences of termination. Also check the required insurance. An automobile casco does not allow the practice of leasing bicycles to be deducted.

For instalment payment, see Articles 7 and 10 of the LCC. The range of 500 to 80,000 CHF is insufficient to establish liability.

Beware of free offers. Article 7 excludes, in particular, loans that are actually interest-free and without fees. It also excludes those that can be repaid within a maximum of three months. An electric bike financing scheme announced with no % request for payment therefore requires careful reading.

Control the administrative fees, the imposed insurance premiums, and any differences from the cash price.

As of January 1, 2026, the OFJ confirms two maximum rates:

  • 10 % for cash credits.
  • 12 % for overdraft loans, particularly cards that use this form of credit.

Do not transpose these ceilings indistinctly to each lease. Their scope and the partial application provided for in Article 8 still require legal verification. The current French consolidation of the LCC remains to be reviewed before publication.

When Article 16 of the LCC applies, the written revocation takes effect within 14 days upon receipt of the legal copy of the contract. This is not a general right to return the bike.

Personal loan When this electric bike financing makes sense

For a small amount, you should prefer cash if your reserve remains sufficient. A truly fee-free offer could also be suitable.

Funding for electric bicycles based on personal loan merit: especially an analysis for:

  • A family cargo that could replace a second car.
  • Several bicycles or necessary equipment grouped together in a coherent project.
  • A temporary advance on a confirmed aid, with compatible deadlines and minimum bank requirements.

Check which car expenses would actually be eliminated. Pooling purchases does not automatically reduce their cost.

Advantages and limitations of personal loan

The loan allows the purchase of new or used property, subject to the lender’s conditions. Article 17 of the LCC authorizes early repayment. It provides for a refund of interest and an appropriate reduction of the costs associated with the unused period.

Article 28 imposes a capacity assessment based on amortization over 36 months. This test does not set a maximum contractual duration.

Include family interests and expenses. Never increase the loan to reach a minimum bank balance. Have any ZEK procedures specified, separate from the legal information center.

Lica Intervenes as a broker to assist in the comparison of financing for electric bicycles. The lender retains the decision to grant the credit.

Practical case: financing a family cargo bike

Illustrative practical case. A Vaud family is considering a 7,000- CHF euro loan over 36 months. All the amounts, rates and conditions are fictitious. They do not constitute an offer or Lica a real municipal scheme.

We assume an effective annual rate of 6 % in both scenarios. CHF The contribution and fees are 0. Payments are made monthly, at the end of the month. No services are included, nor is any additional insurance imposed.

A fictitious aid of 500 CHF arrives in the third month. We assume that its granting is confirmed and that the two eligible funding methods are available. The family keeps it, without any early repayment.

Lease provides for a contractual right of repurchase CHF at 1,000 at maturity. The two scenarios therefore lead to ownership. A common usage budget of 900 CHF covers insurance and maintenance. The equipment is already available, with no battery replacement planned.

Credit or leasing: compare the total cost of financing an electric bike

  • Personal loan. Initial savings for the purchase: 0 CHF. Thirty-six monthly installments of approximately 212.45 CHF. Total repayments: approximately 7,648 CHF. No refinancing. After the assistance received: approximately 7,148 CHF, or 8,048 CHF with use.
  • Leasing with repurchase. Initial treasury for the purchase: 0 CHF. Thirty-six leases of approximately 186.97 CHF, then 1,000 CHF for repurchase. Total: approximately 7,731. CHF After the aid received: approximately 7,231, CHF or 8,131 CHF with the use.

These results are rounded. The lower rent here masks a higher cost. Compare also the cash price or any free offer. CHF The 700 tax package is not included in this calculation.

Travel insurance and civil liability: protecting a financed asset

Insurance complements your electric bike financing. A flight does not automatically eliminate your payment obligations.

For a slow bike, check the private RC for damage to others. Homeowners« insurance can cover theft under the warranties purchased. Outside the home, check the »simple theft outside” extension.

The TCS cites a standard coverage of 2,000 CHF with a deductible of 200 CHF. These are contractual examples, not legal caps.

For a fast bike, yellow plates and RC are mandatory. Check specifically for theft coverage.

According to the OFS data cited by the TCS, 48,504 flights of electric bicycles and electric motorbikes were recorded in 2023. This total does not only refer to electric bicycles. It also does not describe the year 2026.

  • Control the guaranteed amount, the value at nine or the current value.
  • Check the coverage, accessories and exclusions.
  • Follow the requirements for anti-theft and parking.

Declaring the purchase price does not guarantee its full refund.

Financing electric bicycles and commuting, making an informed decision

Compare the bike, public transport and the second car over the same period. Save the remaining expenses, including maintaining an existing subscription.

  1. Evaluate actual usage, distance, category and parking.
  2. Establish a complete budget and maintain a safety margin.
  3. Check the confirmed help and the employer’s possible participation.
  4. Examine the counter, then a bid that is actually 0 %.
  5. Then compare leasing and credit, including insurance, if necessary.

Before signing an electric bike financing agreement, ask the retailer these questions:

  • What is the cash price and the total to be paid?
  • Who will be the owner and what is the redemption right?
  • What fees and insurance are mandatory?
  • What does the contract provide for in the event of theft or termination?
  • Does the funding allow the grant to be obtained?
  • What documents are required before purchasing?
