Solar panel cost in Switzerland: real prices and return on investment

Solar panel cost

Solar panel costs fell in 2025. Even so, a complete 10 kWp installation still represents a significant investment. Illustrative example: more than CHF 20,000 for a detached house, although this is not a universal minimum. Here is how to compare costs, factor in subsidies and estimate the return on investment before choosing your financing. This information reflects the situation as of 13 October 2026.

Prices of solar panels: what a solar installation costs in Switzerland

The report by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) published in August 2026 gives the following median figures for 2025. Solar panel costs here cover the complete installation, not just the modules.

  • 2–10 kW: 2 497 CHF/kW excluding VAT. Statistical reference for this category, no individual quote.
  • 10–30 kW: 1 911 CHF/kW excluding VAT. The perimeter remains that of the installations studied.
  • 30–100 kW: 1,428 CHF/kW excluding VAT. This median does not automatically translate to a villa.

These kW prices have decreased % by 4 to 9 compared to 2024, depending on the categories. They do not constitute guaranteed tariffs today.

The kW measures the installed power. The kWh measures the energy produced or consumed. To compare offers, request a total price including VAT and a precise description of the services provided.

Check in particular the following positions:

  • Renovation of the roof and adaptation of the electrical panel.
  • Battery, piloting and connection.
  • Equipment necessary for a collective installation.

These elements can change the price of the solar panels actually paid for.

This causes the price of solar panels to vary

Visit cost of a photovoltaic installation It depends on the project. Compare several quotes and examine the distribution of fixed costs. The quote should specify:

  • The usable surface area, the type of roof and the architectural constraints.
  • Access to the roof and the safety of the construction site.
  • The wiring, the inverter and the connection work.

An installation that meets the applicable criteria may be subject to a notification procedure. However, authorization may be required, particularly in accordance with building protection regulations. Please confirm the current requirements with the municipality.

In the PPE, check in advance the necessary collective decisions and the cost allocation.

To compare solar panel costs, request three quotes covering equivalent services. SuisseEnergie offers a free review through its check-devis-solaire service. The sonnendach.ch site also gives a first estimate of your roof's potential.

One-time reimbursement, the aid that reduces the price of solar panels

From April 1, 2025, contributions related to power include, under 30 kW:

  • 360 CHF/kW for an added or isolated installation.
  • 400 CHF/kW for an integrated installation.

Illustrative example: 10 kW added would correspond to 3,600 CHF, subject to eligibility and the applicable tariff.

The one-time fee is charged after the commissioning and processing of the file. None Payment deadline This is not guaranteed here. The price of solar panels after aid remains therefore distinct from the initial amount to be financed.

A preparatory document envisages 400 and 440 CHF/kW as of April 2027. This increase remains a project to be confirmed by October 13, 2026. Its estimate of an approximately 17% coverage % applies to a typical installation, not every project.

Consult Pronovo for the application process and francsenergie.ch to search for local subsidies. Check whether they are available and whether they can be combined. For condominium ownership (PPE), also establish who submits the application and who receives the one-off remuneration.

The net cost of a solar installation does not necessarily correspond to the amount to be financed initially. In Switzerland, subsidies and tax effects apply according to separate schedules: the financing plan must cover the invoices due without considering these benefits as already available cash.

Self-consumption and repurchase price: where does profitability come from?

The price of solar panels is not enough measure their profitability. It is necessary to distinguish between the electricity consumed directly and that sold to the network.

Swissolar uses a hypothetical 1,000 kWh produced per kW per year. The actual production depends, among other things, on the roof and its location.

A journalistic reference mentions 30 to 40 % kWh per day for a villa, sometimes close to 50 % after optimization. These are not guarantees. Autoconsumption measures the portion of production used on site, not the energy autonomy of the dwelling.

ElCom, the Federal Electricity Commission, is forecasting a median of 26.5 centimes/kWh for 2027 for the H4 consumption profile, with annual consumption of 4,500 kWh.

Attention: Your economy corresponds to the variable tariff actually avoided. The Fixed charges Those that remain must not be included in this calculation.

  • In 2026, without an agreement, the recovery relies on the quarterly benchmark market price. A minimum remuneration of 6 ct./kWh applies to installations below 30 kW.
  • The adopted reform provides for remuneration based on prices at the time of injection as early as 2027. A transition is planned until the end of 2027 without any intelligent measure.
  • The compensation mechanism compares the reference price of the period to the minimum. It does not guarantee 6 ct. per hour injected.

In these scenarios, self-consumption would generally be more advantageous than injection. Study the operation of the heat pump and the car charging.

For batteries under 10 kWh, the SFOE reports a median of CHF 686/kWh. This is not a guaranteed flat-rate surcharge.

For condominium ownership, distinguish between an RCP, a virtual RCP and a CEL — a self-consumption grouping, its virtual variant and a local electricity community. For CELs, the SiL report a grid charge reduction of 20% or 40%, depending on the configuration. This does not apply to the whole bill.

Lowering the price of solar panels, a practical example

This illustrative example concerns a 10 kW villa and uses the 2027 tariff reference. The price of the solar panels chosen is hypothetical and not based on a valid quote.

  • Invoice: 21,558 CHF HT, or approximately 23,304 CHF TTC with an assumed VAT of 8.1 %%, to be confirmed.
  • Estimated single compensation: 3,600 CHF.
  • Cost after aid: 19,704 CHF.
  • Theoretical fiscal economics: 19,704 × 25 % = 4,926 CHF.
  • Estimated final cost: 14,778 CHF.
  • Supposed annual production: 10,000 kWh.
  • Self-consumption: 3,000 × 0.265 CHF = 795 CHF.
  • Injection: 7,000 × 0.06 CHF = 420 CHF.
  • Yield: 10,000 × 0.02 CHF = 200 CHF.
  • Annual balance before financing and tax on revenues: 1,015 CHF.

Replace the 26.5 ct. with your chosen variable tariff. The 6 ct. injection fee is a simplified scenario, not a guaranteed individual income.

The simple payback period would be 14.6 years with the assumed tax benefit, compared to 19.4 years without it. With an operation at 5 ct./kWh, the balance would fall to 715 CHF. The payback period would then be 21 years, including the tax benefit.

The profitability of solar panels therefore depends heavily on assumptions. Swissolar’s 30-year horizon does not guarantee either constant tariffs or the absence of replacement.

  1. Pay the deposit and the invoice according to the contract.
  2. Commissioning and completing the help file.
  3. Receiving the aid, then observing the tax effect.
  4. Consider early reimbursement when cash becomes available.

Do not deduct these benefits a second time when they are refund the credit. Fine-tune your simulation with the SwissEnergy solar calculator.

Taxation: Deduct the price of solar panels before 2029

Calculating the price of solar panels depends, among other things, on the building and the solar panels themselves. Applicable tax rules. Distinguish an existing private building from a new construction. The Swiss Energy Tax Report documents the differences between the cantons.

The deductible expense must take into account the subsidies. Their subsequent payment may require special treatment. Also check the taxation of injection revenues with the competent administration.

The 25 % in the practical case represent a hypothetical overall marginal rate: federal, cantonal and communal. They do not correspond to the direct federal tax alone.

The abolition of imputed rental value takes effect on 1 January 2029. The reform removes energy-related deductions from direct federal tax. Cantons may nevertheless retain certain deductions on a temporary basis. The no-tax-benefit scenario therefore does not apply everywhere from 2029.

If you are planning before the end of 2028, have the tax year of allocation confirmed. Review the installation, invoicing and payment dates. Also check article 32 LIFD, the Federal Act on Direct Federal Taxation, and the conditions for carrying the deduction over two tax periods. No carry-over extending into 2029 should be treated as secured without confirmation of the transitional provisions.

Financing solar panels, savings, mortgage, contracting or personal loan

Financing the price of solar panels requires distinguishing between profitability and repayment capacity. Compare the four options based on your available budget and your needs.

  • Savings: potentially quick mobilization without borrowing interest. Limited paperwork, property retained, but reduced liquidity. Cash is generally still preferable if your safety net remains sufficient.
  • Mortgage: potentially lower rates, but procedures and delays to be anticipated. Check the property appraisal, deed, notary, and land registry. You remain the owner; the flexibility depends on the contract.
  • Contracting: Initial investment possibly avoided, depending on the offer. Check the schedule, property, maintenance, and electricity price. Compare the total cost, duration, and exit conditions.
  • Personal loan : without a real estate guarantee in the scenario studied. You remain the owner, but you bear interest and monthly payments. The timeframe depends on the study of the file and the legal steps; acceptance is not guaranteed.

The LCC, the Swiss Consumer Credit Act, covers amounts from CHF 500 to CHF 80,000, subject to its other exclusions. This upper threshold is not a universal ceiling on personal loans.

In 2026, the maximum rate for cash loans is 10 %%. This is a legal ceiling, not a commercial offer.

  • Article 16: right of revocation for 14 days.
  • Article 28: capacity assessed on an amortization over 36 months, even for a 60-month contract.
  • Article 17: early repayment with the refund of interest and a fair reduction of the costs related to the unused duration.

Here is an illustrative example with one personal loan:

Borrowing 23,300 CHF over 60 months at 7% annual % interest would give approximately 461 CHF monthly payments. The calculation assumes that the monthly payments are due at the end of the month, without additional fees or insurance. The interest would be approximately 4,380 CHF.

An exceptional reimbursement of 8,500 CHF after the twelfth month would bring the total duration to approximately 38 months. The interest would then approach 2,340 CHF, to be confirmed by a contractual schedule.

But the solar example only generates about 85 CHF monthly revenues before financing and taxation. Compared to 461 CHF monthly revenues, the remaining effort would therefore be close to 376 CHF. The electricity savings generally do not cover the credit.

The twelfth month remains hypothetical. The aid may arrive later; the tax benefit may simply reduce a tax to be paid. Therefore, mobilize only the cash flow Truly available.

The profitability of solar panels and the ability to repay a loan personal loan are two different issues. Electricity savings can alleviate the financial burden, but do not guarantee coverage of the monthly payments. Compare the total cost of financing and preserve a safety margin in the household budget.

FAQ on the price of solar panels

What is the price of solar panels for a single-family house in Switzerland?

The SFOE reports CHF 2,497/kWp excl. VAT in the 2–10 kWp category. Our illustrative example comes to CHF 23,304 incl. VAT for 10 kWp.

How much does the solar electricity injected into the grid generate?

It depends on the contract and the applicable mechanism. The minimum of 30 kW does not guarantee every hour of injection in 2027.

In how many years are solar panels amortized?

Our example gives 14.6 to 19.4 years depending on the tax benefit. No time limit is guaranteed; the costs can lengthen it.

Do I need a building permit to install solar panels?

An advertisement may be sufficient under certain conditions. Check with the municipality about the building, the project, and local regulations.

Can one deduct the cost of solar panels from his taxes?

Currently under certain conditions. The energy deduction will disappear from the IFD as of 2029; a temporary cantonial retention remains possible.

Pre-financing can also be considered in anticipation of the one-off remuneration and tax savings. These amounts can then be used to make an early repayment, which Article 17 LCC allows with a reduction of interest for the unused period. However, the granting remains subject to the acceptance of the lender, After examining your creditworthiness (Art. 28 LCC), once the contract has been signed, you still have 14 days to revoke it, upon receipt of your copy (Art. 16 LCC).

For a quick analysis, prepare the following elements:

  • The contractor’s T.C.D. quote, which sets the price of the solar panels and the installation; ;
  • the amount of your personal contribution, if any; ;
  • estimated aid, single remuneration and provincial or communal subsidies; ;
  • your situation, whether it be a villa or a condominium with the decision of the co-owners regarding the common roof; ;
  • the monthly amount that your budget can afford, not to mention the electricity savings.
