Replacing a villa’s oil or gas heating system with a heat pump is a significant investment. However, heat pump prices in Switzerland should be assessed after deducting subsidies and in light of how you will handle the financing of the remaining balance. Technical options, quotes, subsidies, cantonal requirements and savings: here are the key points to review as of 26 October 2026 to plan a replacement that fits your budget.
Air-to-Water or Ground Source Heat Pump: Key Differences for a Villa
A heat pump draws energy from the air or the ground. It also uses electricity to power the heating system. The energy it captures is free, but making use of it requires a correctly sized installation.
The coefficient of performance, or COP, is the ratio of heat produced to electricity consumed. A COP of 3 means three units of heat for every unit of electricity. However, this figure does not guarantee actual performance over an entire heating season.
- Air-to-water: the investment is generally lower. The location of the outdoor unit and its noise must be assessed under the Noise Abatement Ordinance (NAO), using the Cercle Bruit form.
- Ground source: efficiency is generally higher, but the investment increases. Borehole drilling depends on permits and local constraints.
Existing radiators do not automatically make the project impossible. The installer must check their sizing, the required initial temperature, and the insulation. These parameters influence both the technical choice and the future costs.
How Much Does a Fully Installed Heat Pump Cost?
The GSP presentation (Swiss professional association for heat pumps) dated 18 March 2026 provides benchmark figures for a home with an energy reference area of 180 m²:
- Air-to-water heat pump: around CHF 45,000 to 55,000 for a turnkey replacement.
- Ground source heat pump: around CHF 65,000 to 75,000, including borehole drilling.
These price ranges are neither a guaranteed national average nor a valid quote for any particular villa. The price of a heat pump depends, among other things, on the building and the proposed area.
Check the adaptations of the hydraulic network, the connections and any modifications to the radiators. Also check the performance related to the PAC System-Module certificate when the project requires it.
The same presentation cites around CHF 120 to 140 per metre drilled. It also lists a line item of CHF 20,000 to 25,000 for the hydraulic system. Do not automatically add these amounts to the turnkey price, as they may already be included in the quote.
Insulation, underfloor heating, access to the construction site and the constraints of the terrain can all affect the bill. Therefore, ask for quotes detailing the inclusions and exclusions.
Lica helps you calculate your remaining out-of-pocket cost after the expected subsidies. The credit broker also assesses your repayment capacity before any financing application is submitted.
What subsidies for a heat pump
The Buildings Programme and cantonal subsidies can reduce the net cost. However, eligibility conditions depend on the canton, the heating system being replaced, the heat pump’s output and the technical requirements.
Replacing a fossil-fuel or electric heating system is therefore not enough to guarantee a subsidy. In particular, check the conditions relating to certification and the Heat Pump System Module.
As dated reference figures, the GSP presentation of March 2026 included the following examples from Geneva:
- Air-to-water, measure M-05: flat-rate amount of CHF 3,000, plus CHF 400 per kW.
- Ground source, measure M-06: flat-rate amount of CHF 3,000, plus CHF 800 per kW.
These references do not constitute a guaranteed rate for your request. Please have the amounts and conditions applicable confirmed by the canton.
Then follow the order of the steps:
- Obtain the quote and check the technical eligibility.
- Submit the grant application before the work begins.
- Receiving the decision or the necessary provincial confirmation for the start-up.
- Carry out the work according to the accepted conditions.
- Send the completion file.
- Waiting for its validation and payment.
In Geneva, the OCEN (cantonal energy office) must receive the application at least 14 days before the work begins. Payment is made once the completion file has been approved, possibly after an on-site inspection. An expected subsidy is therefore not yet available cash. In other cantons, contact the cantonal energy office.
Financing a heat pump means distinguishing between the cost after subsidies and the cash needed before they are paid out.
When Do You Need to Replace Your Boiler, Depending on Your Canton?
In Geneva, the replacement of heating systems prioritizes renewable energy, subject to applicable conditions and exceptions. A heat pump can meet this goal if the building is suitable for it.
For an oil or gas boiler more than 20 years old, certain interventions trigger a specific requirement. Replacing a main component then requires a replacement with a renewable heating system, under the conditions set out by the OCEN. This applies in particular to the burner, the controller or the boiler body.
On the other hand, changing a valve or a sprinkler does not automatically fall under this situation. The twentieth anniversary does not, by itself, trigger a general obligation to replace it.
In the event of a failure during the heating period, temporary fossil fuel production may be tolerated upon request at the OCEN. A solution primarily powered by renewable energy must then be installed before the next heating period begins.
In the canton of Vaud, the new Vaud Energy Act (LVLEne) is scheduled to enter into force generally on 1 January 2027. Certain provisions benefit from a transitional period until 1 July 2027, particularly measures falling under Article 40.
The official schedule provides the following deadlines for fossil installations:
- Installed before 2020: replacement no later than December 31, 2041.
- Installed after 2020: replacement no later than December 31, 2046.
If your installation dates from exactly 2020, ask the canton for clarification. Exemptions exist in specific cases. These include, in particular, proven financial inability evidenced by a rejected bank loan application, for the provisions concerned
Finally, the MoPEC (the cantons’ model energy regulations) is not a uniform national requirement. In other cantons, check the timetable and any exemptions with the cantonal energy office.
How Cost-Effective Is a Heat Pump?
The profitability of a heat pump depends first and foremost on operating savings. The GSP comparison based on data from February 2026 presents the following benchmarks:
- Electricity: 25.43 cents per kWh.
- PAC air-water, with a COP of 3: approximately 8.5 cents per kWh of heat.
- PAC solar-water system, with a COP of 4: approximately 6.3 cents per kWh of heat.
- Fuel oil: benchmark at 9.13 cents per kWh.
Attention: The efficiency of the boiler must be checked before comparing the fuel with regard to useful heat output. These figures therefore do not, on their own, allow for a percentage of savings to be declared.
The heat pump figures exclude the investment, financing and full maintenance costs. Nor do they reflect October 2026 electricity rates.
To estimate the annual savings, use your consumption and a realistic seasonal performance. Insulation and the starting temperature directly influence the result.
A simple amortization divides the investment chosen by the net annual economy. Calculate it with and without subsidies, specifying the assumptions. Also examine the additional cost compared to another authorized alternative solution.
Finally, add the interest and fees and the overall calculation of the maintenance costs. An energy savings does not guarantee a quick payback or an immediate reduction in the monthly budget.
How to Finance a Heat Pump: Personal Loan or Mortgage Increase?
Start with the complete quote, deduct the confirmed subsidies, and then add your own contribution. Then compare the financing amounts for the same amount.
The mortgage increase often has a lower rate. However, the bank examines the value of the property and Your financial capacity. The procedures can be longer. A new estimate, an additional deed or notary fees are possible, but not systematic.
Private credit This can lead to a faster decision without the need for a new appraisal of the property or mortgage agreement. It does not require a mortgage guarantee. However, the lender checks the borrower’s creditworthiness and may reject the application.
For consumer credit In cash, the legal limit applicable since January 2026 reaches 10 %. This maximum is neither a proposed rate nor an offer Lica. Also confirm the 14-day revocation period and its application to the contract. A quick decision does not mean an immediate payment.
Here is an illustrative example for a 180 m² villa equipped with an air-water heat pump:
- Hypothetical fee: 50,000 CHF.
- Illustrative power: 10 kW, without deducting it from the surface area alone.
- Simulated aid according to the aforementioned Geneva reference: 3,000 + 400 × 10 = 7,000 CHF, subject to eligibility.
- Illustrative net cost: 43,000 CHF.
- Supposedly negligible personal contribution: amount to be financed 43,000 CHF.
In this illustrative example, the temporary need for cash could reach 50,000 CHF before the aid is paid. Therefore, this delay must be arranged with the installer and the financial institution.
To compare the two solutions on the 43,000 CHF illustrations, ask:
- For personal loan the proposed rate, duration, monthly payment, any potential fees, and the total amount to be refunded.
- For the mortgage: interest, setup fees, scheduled amortization and remaining principal due at the end of the term compared.
A lower monthly payment may simply correspond to a slower repayment. Without individualized offers, no reliable monthly payment can be announced.
Lica Compare the offers from several lenders and helps you to put them in perspective with the mortgage option.
Financial summary of installing a heat pump:
| Budgetary post | Illustrative amount | Warning point |
|---|---|---|
| Full price list: PAC air-water system, 180 m² villa | 50,000 CHF (example) | Check the inclusions and exclusions in the quote; surface area alone does not determine power. |
| Geneva subsidy estimated for an illustrative power of 10 kW | 7,000 CHF (example) | Calculation: a fee of 3,000 CHF + 400 CHF/kW, according to the GSP support from March 2026; eligibility and scale to be confirmed with the canton. |
| Net cost after subsidy | 43,000 CHF (example) | Less estimated aid; this net cost does not represent the cash available during the construction project. |
| Supposed personal contribution | 0 CHF (example) | To be adapted to the savings that can be mobilized while maintaining a budgetary reserve. |
| Balance to be financed after aid and contributions | 43,000 CHF (example) | Comparison personal loan and mortgage increase on the same amount, with interest, fees and the remaining capital due. |
| Temporary need before the payment of the aid | Up to 50,000 CHF (example) | According to the invoice schedule; in Geneva, the aid is paid after the completion file has been validated. Do not add this expense to the balance to be financed. |
Frequently asked questions about the heat pump
Does a heat pump work with radiators?
Yes, this compatibility is possible. However, the heating engineer must check the necessary temperatures, the power of the radiators, and the sizing of the installation. Insulation also counts. Do not plan to replace them systematically or store them without a technical examination.
Can we touch the grant after the work is done?
Yes, the payment can take place after completion, as in Geneva. However, the request must precede the work. Leaving the file after the work is finished may compromise the aid. Also check for the necessary confirmation before starting.
My boiler breaks down in winter, what should I do?
Contact the heating contractor and the cantonal authority before deciding on a definitive replacement. In Geneva, a temporary fossil solution can be tolerated upon request, subject to conditions. The primarily renewable solution must be ready before the next heating period. This option does not automatically apply to other cantons.
Prepare an appropriate replacement for your budget
A heat pump project is being prepared both financially and technically. To make an informed decision, keep three key points in mind:
- Compare complete quotes, then deduct only the aid to which your application is actually entitled.
- Submit the grant application before the work begins and check the replacement schedule applicable in your canton.
- Evaluate the profitability based on your consumption, maintenance costs, and the total cost of financing.
Also anticipate the discrepancy between the bills for the construction project and the payment of the grant. The final net cost does not always correspond to the cash needed during the works. A budgetary reserve remains therefore important to avoid a too tight commitment.
It personal loan can simplify certain procedures, but it generally costs more than a mortgage increase. Its repayment creates a regular charge which must remain compatible with your essential expenses. It does not replace either sufficient financial capacity or a prudent analysis of indebtedness.
